You're at the right place if you've decided to enter Ottawa Carleton E School's radio commercial contest.

Why are we doing this?

There are a few reasons. We have a new writer who thinks your views of earning high school credits through an online high school will connect better with people like you.

He sees things only from his viewpoint – not yours, a friend’s, a parent or guardian – whoever. Basically other perspectives are needed.

Not many people get what an online high school is, why it works for so many, how some can take charge of their lives, get on track, who knows? That’s why it’s important to explain it in a way that a friend would get it.

Plus, having a contest makes our job easier for writing commercials. Just sayin.

What's in it you for you?

• Maybe you'd find it kind of cool to hear your own radio commercial heard by tons of people.
• Win prizes??? We don't have a lot of huge prizes. Since cash is king, there’ll be $100 cash as 1^st prize (Hey, we're a high school. Cut us some slack! Ca$h is ca$h); movie passes, a new Ipod (we bought for another project), and maybe some radio station swag - promotional tshirts, mugs, stuff like that.
• If you end up on the shortlist of winners, then it's an accomplishment. How would that look on your resume or application to other places?
• Maybe you think you're a great writer? It's a chill opportunity to actually prove it.
• If your commercial is really good, we could ask you to become a part time writer. Cool?

THE CONTEST

Here's what we're looking for. Basically, write a 30 second commercial in your own words; words that you'd use with a friend to explain why they should check out Ottawa Carleton E-School.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:

• Check out the site. See what's available.
• Decide (as a student, parent, friend, family member) what’s appealing to you and/or why.
• Tips:
  • Make notes. Write this stuff down so that you can refer to it when you're writing.
  • The more you write, the easier it'll be to get to your final 75 words, which is about 30 seconds.
  • Make sure that you use your own words. Copying and pasting is not an option. :) Borrowed writing will be disqualified. Besides, the idea is for you to have some fun with this.
  • If you're stuck, then, Google how to write a commercial. There are tons of tips and approaches online.

Everyone has different circumstances. There are lots of reasons why people decide to use an online high school, like:

• Some need to be part time students. They work while trying to fit in night school; Basically try to fit classes into their schedule;
• Improve a mark;
• Make up a credit;
• Earn a credit not offered or available during the semester (There are some cool electives that could be more interesting. Let’s face it, when you’re taking a course you like, having more fun, it's more rewarding and seems easier)
• Fix your schedule so that you can do what you need to do….even if it means being able to sleep in when it makes sense.
